Talking To My Dog In The Park

Why don’t I see other people doing this?

I love parks.

I love to walk in parks.

I love to walk in parks that are close to my house.

I particularly love to walk in parks that have no other people in them, but that’s hard to come by. Especially with the current national obsession with pickleball, thwock, thwock, thwock breaking the silence to smithereens. It’s scaring the deer.

Actually, it’s probably just annoying the deer.

My dog is a fiend for walking. She lives for the park. She knows the paved trails like the back of her paw, and she has very, very specific ideas about which way we’re going to go. I might be holding the leash, but Hershey is calling the shots.

Which leads to conversations — yes, out loud — like this:

ME: “We have to go this way. There’s another dog coming.”

HERSHEY: “I don’t want to go that way. I want to go this way.”

“Yeah, I know, but we can’t. Hold on, let’s see which way the other — ”

Two Indian gentlemen chose this moment to walk by as I attempted to appear as if it’s completely normal that I’m having a one-sided conversation with my dog.
