Ooo, this feels a little close to home as a writer on Medium.

I pity the many talented musicians who have to do this, but with the comedians I double the empathy, feeling sorry for them and then feeling bad about feeling sorry for them, and then trying to summon a laugh from the overwhelming pathos of it all. The guy we saw probably hasn’t yet stooped to performing at retirement homes, but he will.
