Nothing Says Loser Like Being Alone

Yeah, I know everybody is going to have feelings about this, but this is my page and I can say whatever I want (within legally and culturally actionable parameters, of course).

After my divorce, it took me a really long time to stop saying “my husband”.

If you’re married, you absolutely know what I mean. You can barely get through a sentence without saying “my husband” this or “my wife” that. You certainly can’t get through an entire conversation without making a spousal reference.

That was always my safety blanket. The words “my husband” signaled that no matter what I looked like, I was not a complete loser who couldn’t find a man.

Yes, I’m sure this is antiquated “boomer” thinking, but the world is not yet completely populated by Gen Xers, despite their concentrated efforts to erase everyone over the age of 50.

Sometimes I refer to “my friend”, but that too is just signaling. Everybody has friends, right? How could I not have a friend?

Well, working in one room for 16 years and interacting with nothing but criminals, bankrupts, and angry people getting divorced will leave you with no friends.
