GRIEF/LOSS/CHANGE
It Was Easy to Sell My Mom’s House
But hard to let it go.
After her recent death, I sold my mom’s house quickly and easily.
Which is amazing given my immediate dive into panic and catastrophic thinking after I had an appraiser come out and give me the bad news about the foundation.
That revelation had me Googling the names of flippers who would give me anywhere from 50 to 75% of the property’s value in return for a quick sale, no questions asked.
Fortunately, I got a text from the daughter of my mom’s neighbor, who I went to high school with (the daughter, not the neighbor), and her daughter (the daughter’s daughter) had a friend who was looking to buy a house with her boyfriend.
Nobody gets married anymore.
The boyfriend owns a landscaping company, so they needed a larger property with a barn. They said they were having a hard time finding anything that didn’t smell like cat pee or cigarettes.
My mom’s house smells like nothing but dust and old Reader’s Digests.
Bizarrely enough, it also has the exact same floor plan as the house the girl grew up in, except in reverse. She and her parents mentioned this repeatedly, so I clearly had nostalgia on my side.
