BEHIND THE SCENES
I Worked At The Court During A Famous Murder Trial
Because of course I did.
In 1997, Audrey Iacona was accused of giving birth in her parents’ basement, suffocating the baby in a plastic bag (assuming it was alive, which is open to debate), and then placing it in a clothes hamper.
This is old news now. People are leaving babies out in the woods and shoving them in plastic bags left and right.
But at the time, it made national headlines, and it was one of the biggest trials to ever hit Medina County, Ohio, population 160,000 give or take.
I had just started my job as a judge’s secretary, and my judge got the case. Lucky me.
I was supremely unqualified to deal with a high-profile murder trial. How many times did I almost get fired for running my mouth? Several.
The incident that really got me into trouble was when I told a lady on the phone that we were placing bets about Audrey’s guilt or innocence.
Never let somebody who thinks they’re funny answer the phone during a murder trial.
