I Know What Medium Wants—That Doesn’t Mean I Like It

I know what Medium wants.

It wants short paragraphs and LOTS of white space.

This is supposed to make reading easier.

But does it? Does it really?

Or is it just fucking annoying?

Especially on a computer.

But also on a phone.

(I do not like it on a plane. I do not like it on a train.)

I agree that paragraphs should be on the short side.

Nobody wants to read an undigestible gas station burrito of words.

But paragraphs that consist of a single sentence?

What is this — a haiku?

No. It’s an article about the evolution of the butt wipe.

Does The New Yorker worry about white space?

I don’t know. Maybe they do. Maybe that’s why I never hear back from them.

Yeah, that’s it.

And why do we need to know how many minutes it will hypothetically take to read an article?

Can’t we just start reading because a topic seems interesting and then decide if we want to keep reading or not?
