I Don’t Understand People

Do they just have no self-awareness at all?

My boss is leaving for Hawaii with his family on Christmas day. (This is the universe’s Christmas gift to me.)

He’s in a froth because he’s afraid something is going to make them cancel — COVID. The Apocalypse. Whatever.

He’s so worked up over COVID that when my co-worker sneezed last week and sounded congested, he threw a mask at her and told her to go get a rapid test. (She had a cold.)

One attorney of our acquaintance is presently recovering from his second bout of COVID. Another is in COVID rehab. My boss’s wife lost her cousin to COVID last week. My co-worker’s daughter is, as we speak, at the urgent care getting swabbed because her co-worker tested positive.

And yet, when two new clients showed up at our door a few hours ago, my boss escorted them, maskless, into his office and closed the door without a second thought.

Uh, hello?

Clients regularly parade in and out of here without masks. In fact, I almost never see anyway wearing a mask, even though I personally know several people who are actively ill with COVID.
