How Will Taylor Swift Morph Into A Middle-Aged Artist?
Here’s the thing. Taylor Swift is 32 years old. Let that sink in for a minute.
Even though she’s cemented in our minds as the girl behind You Belong With Me, she’s a grown-ass woman. And middle age is breathing hotly down her porcelain-skinned neck.
Madonna worked with an entirely different set of tools than Taylor has at her disposal.
Madonna was an ’80s club kid with two things on her mind: fame and sex. The only question was, “How far will she go?”
Sex answered that. The 1992 coffee table book (remember those?) rode through popular culture on a tsunami of shock-appeal that wouldn’t even cause a ripple today.
Taylor is turning into a one-trick pony. And yes, songs from her most-recent album Midnights are currently occupying all top-10 spots in the Billboard Hot 100. But that admittedly massive achievement is fueled by the hordes of teenaged and 20-something Swifties who downloaded it en masse the second it became available.
That’s a pretty narrow slice of the cheesecake, and like they say, timing is everything.
