Honestly, and I'm sure this is an unpopular opinion, but growing up, we all called each other everything, and there was no real hostility or import to the words. And we barely registered them. Now, with the "new fragility" (ooh, I like that, I should write that down) the slurs are more powerful because we've GIVEN them that power by drawing so much attention to them, where before they were just noise.
