Do You Suffer From POO?
Perpetual Online Outrage is a real disorder I just made up.
Every day, thousands of people all over the world suffer from POO — Perpetual Online Outrage (also known as POD — Persistent Outrage Disorder).
Before succumbing to POO, ask yourself: Are you really offended by what you’re seeing, or are you upset about something else completely unrelated to the article/post/picture in front of you?
Maybe your boss yelled at you. Maybe your spouse is having an affair. Maybe you’re just hungry (or “hangry” as the kids say).
Many years ago, you would’ve had to write a letter which you would then need to mail to the offending publication, which might then forward it to the object of your ire.
Months passed during this process. Tempers cooled. You forgot what you were even angry about.
But NOW, the wonders of the modern age allow you to immediately vent your spleen, no postage required. And for whatever reason, you’ve decided to take out your frustration on the nearest available target — a stranger on the internet.
Really, has there ever been a better punching bag than a person you’ve never met who doesn’t know who you are and…
